Frequently Asked Questions …

General

What are your shop hours?

Our regular shop hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11am to 5pm and Sunday from Noon to 5pm. We are closed Mondays and most holidays.

Where are you located?

We are located at 82 South Montgomery Street, San Jose, CA 95110 near the Caltrain Diridon Station and SAP Center. We have bike racks as well as plenty of parking.

Is your bike shop open to the public?

Yes. We have a retail shop and provide repair services for all the community.

Donating

How can I donate my bike?

We gladly accept bike donations during shop hours and will happily issue a tax receipt. Please see our intake guidelines here. We do not offer pickup service.

Can I donate other bike related items?

Yes. We are happy to take wheels, bike parts, tools, etc. We also take gently used bike clothing, shoes, helmets and locks.

What items are not accepted as donations?

  • Bikes in very poor condition since they cannot be repaired.
  • E-bikes since they are too expensive and complicated to fix.
  • Car bike racks since there are too many variations and are difficult to resell.

I want to support your mission through a financial donation or gift of stock. Who should I contact?

Please visit our donation page here. Every gift makes an impact, regardless of the amount, and is deeply appreciated. We encourage you to become a sustaining monthly donor committed to our mission to transform lives through the medium of bikes. If you have questions about making a gift, please contact us at at goodkarma@goodkarmabikes.org.

Sales and Service

Do you have a (S/M/L/XL) road bike in stock?

Our inventory is driven by donations and constantly changing. To see some of what is currently available, visit our online store here. For a complete inventory, please come by during shop hours.

Do you have a specific wheel set or bike part in stock?

We’re not able to search through our parts inventory for specific items—but you’re absolutely welcome to stop by and look through what we have!

My bike has an issue—can you fix it?

Please bring your bike in during shop hours and one of our mechanics can take a look and let you know what we can do. We aren’t able to diagnose or assess bike issues through photos or descriptions. P.S. If the frame is cracked or bent, you’re out of luck.

Do you sell e-bikes?

No.

Do you service e-bikes?

We can assist with minor repairs such as flat tires and basic mechanical adjustments; however, we do not work on electrical components of e-bikes.

How much is a specific service?

You can find a full list of services and pricing here. If you still have questions after reviewing that, we’re happy to help in person.

Where does the money you make go?

100% of our bike shop revenue is invested into our programs. 50% of the bikes that are donated to us we grant back into our community. We have provided $4M in financial assistance for people in need in the form of free bikes, free parts and free service.

Do you offer bike consignment?

No.

Do you rent bikes?

No. However, we often hear from people who are in town for a short time—maybe for work or a summer program—and there’s still a great option! You’re welcome to purchase one of our affordable refurbished bikes (sometimes as low as $99), and when you’re done with it, simply donate it back to us. We’ll provide you with a tax receipt, and your bike will go to someone in need. It’s a win-win!

Volunteering and Education

I am interested in volunteering. How can I find out more?

Volunteers are the core to our mission of providing bike transportation to the community. We need help with bike repair, retail sales, operations and events. We also appreciate unique skills like marketing, law, finance, information technology, teaching, social media, web sites, construction, etc. Click here for more information.

How do I register for your Park Tool School?

Please visit our programs page here to learn more about the Park Tool School. There is a link to register.

Free Bikes and Service

I’m a case manager and want to support a client in receiving a granted bike. How do I get started?

If you are an approved partner, email freebikes@goodkarmabikes.org to receive a link to complete a free bike request which will be evaluated based on need and availability. If you are a new partner, also email freebikes@goodkarmabikes.org and ask how to join our partner program.

I’m in a tough spot—how can I get a granted bike?

We’re here to help, but there’s a process in place. Please work with a case manager and have them email us at freebikes@goodkarmabikes.org. They will be asked to complete a free bike request which will be evaluated based on need and availability. Please note that we work only with case managers and do not respond to direct client requests.

I need repairs, but I can’t afford them.

We invite you to our Free Saturday Bike Repair Service, held every Saturday at 10:00 AM in the back parking lot. See here our programs page for more information. Proof of government assistance is required.
